DETAILS OF REQUIREMENTS

JOURNALS

Students will be required to keep a journal that allows them the opportunity to reflect on the experiences that they are having, describe ideas that come up while reflecting, and document learning as it is taking place. These will be done both independently and at times structured with prompts.  Students will use excepts from their journals as evidence of achieving learning outcomes. They can choose what to use from their journal.  The journals will also be used during the debriefing process after the program

PRE-DEPARTURE MEETINGS

Students must attend three (3) mandatory meetings held pre-departure (four if it becomes necessary based on student need).  The goal of these meetings is to orient students to the course and begin the process of learning about working with indigenous peoples.

Orientation

ORIENTATION OF ARRIVAL

There will be one (1) mandatory orientation upon arrival. The purpose of the meeting is to review the objectives of the course and orient students to the schedule while in Hawaiʿi.

LEARNING VIA PRESENTATIONS
AND SITE VISITS

Students will actively participate in two (2) weeks of course material via lectures, site visits, and seminars.

SERVICE LEARNING

Students will engage in one (1) week of service learning.  This provides students the opportunity to apply what they learned in the previous two weeks and orientations into practice at a social service agency. The work involves a short term field placement with one of the following organizations:  Kula No Na Poʿe Papakōlea, which is nonprofit agency that “provides educational and health services to the residents of the Hawaiian Homestead communities of Papakōlea, Kewalo, and Kalāwahine (referred to as Papakōlea)”; KUPU, which is a mentoring , training ,and leadership program for high needs youth “to become stewards of [their] culture and environment, helping them develop a strong connection to the place in which [they] live”; and Hui O Ho‘ohonua (HOH808), which “serves as a centralized hub that will initiate, administrate, operate, and maintain a community network connecting all levels of the community to accomplish sustainable community- development.”

RE-ENTRY MEETINGS

There will be three (3) mandatory post trip re-entry meetings.  These meetings allow students to reflect on their experiences in this course and debrief. Discussing what was learned and reflecting on these lessons will allow students the opportunity to begin working on their required presentation.

PRESENTATION
Reflection On Your Experience

Students are expected to reflect independently throughout the course on their learning experiences and how they are growing personally and professionally.  They will review the Course Outcomes and share 2 -3 of them, highlighting the knowledge, understanding, and awareness they gained through the course.
