BUDGET FOR YOUR TRIP

2. Make a study abroad budget plan

Here is a worksheet we have put together to help you financially plan for your semester abroad.
Update the spreadsheet with your own numbers.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Before You Go

OVERALL PROGRAM FEE

TBD

What does this cover?

PROGRAM APPLICATION/DEPOSIT FEE

$400.00

Deposit toward your overall program fee

INSURANCE OR TRAVEL INSURANCE

Find a comprehensive plan that works for you. Note: this is in addition to your general insurance coverage.

ROUND TRIP AIRFARE

Book no more than 3 months in advance to score the optimum cost. Consider using student resources such as www.studentuniverse.com, kayak.com, and similar sources. These links are provided as examples but we do not endorse any given site per se.

BAGGAGE FEES

We all hate them, but it is best to budget for them.

SUITCASE, BACKPACK, LUGGAGE

Buy a nice piece of luggage with sound quality. Plan on traveling lightly.

CLOTHING, SHOES, ETC.

Bring clothing appropriate to the region’s culture and weather conditions. It will be warm and humid so dress in light layers; however, bring jeans for outdoor service work.

CAMERA

You will want to visually document your experience, so come prepared with a small camera or a great option is your phone camera with charger.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

While You're There

ACCOMMODATION FEES

Housing fees are included in the program fee.

YUMMY FOOD!

We have estimated about $50 per day for food and it is included in the total program fee. If you want to splurge on fine dining, you will have to budget in higher food amounts in your budget.

You can use your regular cell phone and email.

CULTURAL EXCURSIONS

The cost for museum exhibits, entrance fees, guided tours, etc. that are part of the program are included in the course program fee and schedule.

Approximately $3.00 for wash and $1.50 for dryer

PERSONAL HYGIENE

Shampoo, soap, and conditioner, oh my!

ATM OR BANK FEES

For when you withdraw money or exchange cash. Check with your bank.

SOUVENIRS AND GIFTS

A memento from your great adventure, and some money set aside to buy gifts for your closest family and friends.

POCKET MONEY

For when you really need that double espresso.

INCIDENTALS

Your “just-in-case” fund, which may also double as a replacement fund should you lose anything of significance while abroad.
